Introducing Future Dr. Dawson
On March 7, 2024, our Founder and President, Emily T. Dawson, M.A., signed with the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University to complete her Ph.D. in Communication as a Presidential Doctoral Excellence Award Scholar and Fredrick N. Andrews Fellow. This exciting move will immerse her in a knowledge-based program where she will further solidify her role as an expert in her field and bring cutting-edge innovations to Duly Noted LLC.
Emily’s time at Purdue will add four more years of higher education experience to her six year history. She will focus her doctoral studies on interpersonal communication, expanding her research portfolio on family and intergenerational communication across various contexts: in families, organizations, and society.
While Emily’s primary focus will be on developing her research portfolio and writing her dissertation, during the first two years of her program, she will continue to develop the teaching portfolio she began very early in her career as an undergraduate teaching assistant at Cornell University. Emily has taught a multitude of courses from Persuasion and Social Influence to Public Speaking to Communication Theory.
Translating the skills she uses for teaching in the classroom to more effectively work with clients in consulting sessions is one of Emily’s many academia-driven passions. Session dynamics at Duly Noted are heavily influenced by Emily’s background as a college-level educator; her goal is to create a safe and productive space for clients to learn and grow when they join the Duly Noted community.
Emily seeks to approach Duly Noted consultations in a facilitator role, rather than the classic role many associate with professionals who come from academic backgrounds – a lecturer’s pov. By taking on a facilitation style of consulting, she creates an open environment for sharing information through honest communication, empowering clients to play an active role in their learning and growth.
She began learning about the facilitator perspective during her time in Cornell’s Intergroup Dialogue Project, and continues to improve her application of this practice as she’s grown from an undergraduate teaching assistant, to graduate teaching assistant, to instructor of record, to company founder and lead consultant. Getting back into the classroom at Purdue affords fantastic opportunity for Emily’s continued pursuit of perfection in this area.
In addition to expanding her research and teaching portfolios, Emily is eager to take full advantage of the networking opportunities provided to Purdue’s graduate students. She will have access to some of the world’s leading experts in her field as well as adjacent areas of interest such as psychology, sociology, and human development. Her program also encourages her continued participation in academic conference events such as the National Communication Association’s annual convention.
The Duly Noted team is thrilled to support Emily in this next stage of her career. It will be exciting to see how she continues to serve as a bridge between the inner-circle of academia and our world.
