Launching Duly Noted
Duly Noted’s Founder, Emily, has been an entrepreneurial and science-minded human since childhood. She ran numerous businesses in her youth: lemonade stands, pool cleaning, lawn mowing for the neighborhood, etc.
Emily’s love for science flourished at the science fair and as her academic team’s leader. She was even president of her school’s MATHCOUNTS team. Needless to say, her obsession with academia was evident from a very early age.
It wasn’t until her high school years, however, that Emily’s interest in the science of communication began. Her parents’ divorce rocked her understanding of family, love, and identity during her first year. In what would become a classic coping strategy for Emily, she began attempting to intellectualize what “went wrong” for her family.
Having a love for all sciences helped Emily enthusiastically accept the help of a psychologist in processing the divorce. She quickly realized how deeply impacted she was by her traumatic experiences with her father and the divorce process for her family unit. Emily was a girl wishing for guidance, and thankfully she had a solid support system.
Working with her therapists as she moved through high school and college, Emily expressed her desire to understand not only the psychological impacts but also the communicative nature of how problems arise and are solved in family units. She began researching family issues and communication theory during her undergraduate years at Cornell University - the very beginnings of Duly Noted forming in her mind.
Emily knew she wanted to help people improve their lives with the powerful tool that is the fine art and subtle science of communication, but “how do I do it?” She asked herself repeatedly. Her professors, family, and friends encouraged her to continue her writing and research after graduation.
So naturally, she pursued a graduate degree where she learned about various complex communication theories in interpersonal, intergroup, intercultural, health, and organizational communication spaces. This deep knowledge of communication across fields gave her research agenda focused on family communication incredible support and context. Emily planned to continue in graduate school to obtain a Ph.D. and make her mark as a professor. However, she quickly realized she wanted to be even more involved with communities outside of higher education: parents, grandparents, entire family units as a collective, etc.
Having such an affinity for education that so intensely defined her childhood, it was an extraordinarily difficult decision for Emily to leave her program, but she knew that to reach those who could benefit from her skill set the most, leaving her program with her Master’s and starting her career was the right move.
Quickly after graduation, Emily began building the foundations of Duly Noted. She consulted with academic and professional mentors, made connections with other communication and psychology experts working in the industry, and she rallied her team to set the company’s wheels in motion. Emily and her team successfully launched the company in June of 2023.
Duly Noted now provides a unique consulting service to its clients to help them reach their communication improvement goals. By collating the most current knowledge of communication science, social cognition, and family communication theories, Emily takes a coaching approach to consultations, guiding clients on how to implement communication theory and skills into everyday life.
When reflecting on her journey to launching Duly Noted, “I realize it actually began a long time ago, when I was a young girl looking for guidance in how to communicate my HUGE feelings about my family’s experience with divorce. Without really even knowing what I was doing, I shaped my entire educational career around becoming the resource that I needed as a little girl. I needed not only a therapist but also someone who could help me and my family members with the communication bit.”
Today Emily can serve as that valuable resource for her clients, and she’s incredibly proud of it. She works tirelessly every day to stay current with communication research material and hone her consulting methods and strategy. Leading the team with a passion for human connection and the fire of a lifelong learner, Emily is excited to see just how far Duly Noted will go.
“Realizing how I’ve grown from a little girl needing guidance through a terrible family disruption to a woman with the skill set to help lead the charge in changing the way the world communicates is indescribable. I was blessed with determination and opportunity, and now it’s time to give it all back to families like mine who need that help the most. Incredible scholars and professionals are advocating for healthier communication and relationships in a variety of spaces nowadays. I’m so excited to be among them, building a world full of better communicators one human at a time.”
